Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving. Subtract that from the original price to get the sale price. For example, 30% off £120 = saving of £36, sale price £84.

How do I find the discount percentage if I know the original and sale price?

Divide the saving (original minus sale price) by the original price, then multiply by 100. For example: saving = £120 − £84 = £36; discount % = (36 ÷ 120) × 100 = 30%.

What does 'buy two get one free' equal in percentage discount?

If you pay for two items but get three, you're paying 2/3 of the total cost. The effective discount is 1/3 ≈ 33.3%.

How do I stack two discounts?

Discounts don't simply add. A 20% discount followed by a further 10% off means you pay 80% × 90% = 72% of the original price — a combined saving of 28%, not 30%. This calculator handles single discounts; for stacked discounts apply them one at a time.
