How the date difference is calculated

Calculating the number of days between two dates looks trivial but hides some genuinely fiddly rules. The calculator converts each date to a Julian day number — a running count of days since a fixed epoch — and takes the difference. That gives an unambiguous answer regardless of month lengths, leap years, or century boundaries.

Leap years

A leap year adds a 29 February. The rule is: a year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except centuries, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2000 and 2400 are leap years, but 1900, 2100, 2200 and 2300 are not. Over any long span (say, 100+ years) the number of leap days matters: from 1 Jan 1900 to 1 Jan 2000 is exactly 36,524 days, not the naïve 100 × 365 = 36,500.

Inclusive vs exclusive counting

People often disagree on the answer to "how many days from Monday to Friday". Are we counting the days between (4) or the days involved (5)? By convention this calculator returns the exclusive count — the number of full days between the two dates. Add 1 if you need inclusive.

Weeks, months and years

  • Weeks are simply days ÷ 7.
  • Months aren't fixed length — a "month" between 15 Jan and 15 Feb is 31 days, but between 15 Feb and 15 Mar it's 28 (or 29 in a leap year). The calculator reports full calendar months where the day-of-month matches, and remainder days separately.
  • Years follow the same rule: from 5 June 2020 to 4 June 2025 is 4 years 364 days, not 5 years.

What people actually use this for

  • Project deadlines and countdowns. How many working days until a launch? Multiply the day count by 5/7 for a rough working-day figure, or subtract public holidays for precision.
  • Age in exact days. Useful for legal thresholds (18th, 21st, 60th, 65th birthdays), pet ages, and personal milestones like "10,000 days alive" (about age 27 years 4 months).
  • Payroll and benefit accrual. Many benefits (holiday entitlement, notice periods, pro-rata pay) are calculated in exact days.
  • Historical intervals. How long from Waterloo (18 June 1815) to today? At time of writing that's about 76,900 days, or 210 years and change.

Time zones and daylight saving

This calculator works with calendar dates, not clock times, so time zones and DST transitions don't affect the day count. If you need hour-level precision (e.g. flight duration between London and Sydney), you need a datetime-with-timezone calculation, not a date difference.

Common mistakes

  • Off-by-one on inclusive counting. "The conference runs 5 to 9 October" — that's 5 days if you count both endpoints (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) and 4 days between them.
  • Forgetting leap years in long spans. A "25-year mortgage" is 9,131 days, not 9,125.
  • Confusing months with 30-day units. "180 days" and "6 months" aren't quite the same — six calendar months can be 181 to 184 days depending on which months are involved.
  • Timezone drift. If you enter "today" in one timezone and compare to a date in another, the boundary at midnight can flip your answer by a day. Use UTC dates for anything cross-border.

Frequently asked questions

Does this count today as day zero or day one?

The result is the number of full days between the two dates (exclusive). "Today to tomorrow" returns 1. If you need inclusive counting (both start and end days), add 1 to the result.

How does it handle leap years?

Automatically. The calculation uses Julian day numbers under the Gregorian calendar rules, so 29 February is included in any span that crosses it.

Can I calculate working days only?

Not directly on this tool — it returns calendar days. A quick approximation for working days is calendar days × 5/7. For an exact figure you need to subtract weekends and public holidays specific to your country.

Why is "5 months" sometimes shown as different numbers of days?

Because months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. "5 months" from 1 January is 151 days, but from 1 August it's 153 days. The calculator resolves this by anchoring to the actual calendar dates rather than assuming a fixed 30-day month.

What's the largest date range this supports?

Any Gregorian date from 1 AD to well past the year 9999 — the underlying maths is exact for many thousands of years in either direction. Historical dates before the 1582 Gregorian reform used different calendars in different countries; this tool always uses the proleptic Gregorian rules.
